1000 Emojis In 10 weeks, Each Initially Hand-Drawn by Dan Woodger

Illustrator Dan Woodger was commissioned by messaging app LINE to create 1,000 emojis in 10 weeks.

He was first contacted by art director Jenny Yoo at LINE, who saw his work on It’s Nice That.

Woodger was then roped in to be part of LINE’s project to develop an extensive “emoji encyclopedia” with more than 10,000 emojis, where his set of 1,000 emojis was the first to be released as default emojis for the app.

He said in an interview, “The Art Director and I had a system where I’d deliver a set of 100 illustrations each week. She’d send me a list of 60 things to draw based on a particular theme then I was free to come up with 40 of my own. Each Wednesday night I’d send over my latest batch, we’d discuss options for the next set and then by Thursday morning I’d have my new theme ready to start on.”

Woodger also insisted on drawing each emoji by hand.

He said, “It’s part a labor of love and part obsessive compulsive behavior. I know that by sketching them out first I have a set plan of what I’m going to do when I work it up to final. It also gives me the opportunity to correct any imperfections I make the first time.”

This is also how he spent almost a year working on the labor-intensive project.

“I worked 18 hours a day seven days a week, (sadly I’m not kidding here) so I guess it’d be around 1,260 hours give or take,” saidWoodger.
